The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (DSWT) is an organization dedicated to the protection and preservation of Kenya's wildlife--particularly the endangered elephants and black rhino--and are best known for the hand-rearing of orphaned elephants so that they can return to the wild when ready. The trust was founded by Dr. Dame Daphne Sheldrick in 1977 and was named in memory of her late husband, David Sheldrick, the naturalist and founder warden of Kenya's Tsavo National Park.
The Trust places emphasis on the 8069 sq. miles of the Tsavo National Park, Kenya’s largest wildlife refuge, harboring the country’s single largest population of elephants and a greater biodiversity of species than any other reserve in the world.
Servicing seven full time anti-poaching de-snaring teams, two fully equipped Mobile Veterinary Units, the Orphan's Project as well as community outreach programs, it is easy to see why the DSWT has been a pioneer of Kenya’s very effective conservation strategy to retrieve the highly endangered Black Rhino from extinction, something that has been emulated elsewhere in Africa.
